Dmitry Makovkin - Law Enforcement - Volgograd, Russia

Police Officer Dmitry Makovkin, age 29, died in the line of duty on December 29, 2013, at the Volgograd Railway Station.  

Dmitry was a member of the Volgograd Police Department.  He had formerly served in the Russian Army. 

Volgograd is a city in the south of Russia. It has a population of over 1 million.  Formerly, it was called "Stalingrad".  It is 400 miles from Sochi, which is the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. 

At about 12:45 a.m., a woman, believed to be a Chechen, tried to enter the railway station.  She got to the metal detectors at the entrance.  Witnesses said that Officer Dmitry Makovkin noticed that the woman was acting suspiciously. She hesitated at the turnstile.  Dmitry approached her and she suddenly tried to rush inside. Dmitry tackled her and she ignited the explosive device.

At least 17 people were killed in the blast. At least 44 others were injured. 

On December 30, 2013, a second blast occurred in Volgograd - on a trolley bus in the early morning hours. People were going to work.  Details are uncertain but 14 people may have been killed and 20 injured.  It has been reported that this is also the work of Chechen terrorists. 

In October of 2013, in Volgograd, a female suicide bomber blew herself up on a bus, killing six people and injuring more than 30 others. 

Police officials stated that if Dmitry Makovkin had not intervened and the woman had proceeded further into the building, that many more citizens would have been killed.

Police officials describe Dmitry as a very responsible and active officer who had a future in the Department. He was focused and determined to do his job properly.  He

Dmitry wanted to have children and marry his girlfriend, Anastasia. 

He will be forever missed by his family and his comrades. 

Dmitry is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his mother and father; and his girlfriend, Anastasia.

Thank you for your service to Russia, Dmitry. 

God save us from the terrorists in every country. They are the Lost Ones who stalk the Earth stealing away the lives of the innocent.  Amen.
