Leroy was the safety director for Whirlpool Corporation in Greenville. He was a firefighter for the Englewood Fire Department and the Gettysburg Fire Department. He was an instructor on fire issues at Clark State Community College.
On October 18, 2013, Leroy had responded to a fire call involving farm equipment while on duty with the Gettysburg

The following morning, Leroy fell ill while teaching at a local fire academy. He was treated and transported to the hospital but tragically passed away on October 20, 2013.
He was a member of the Eagles; Darke County Coin Club; Treaty City Amateur Radio; Ohio Society of Fire Service Instructors; and a past member of the Fire Chiefs Association.
Leroy will be forever mourned by his loved ones and his comrades.

Leroy is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his father Leroy Murphy Sr., his son, Wyatt; stepchildren Betty, Nicole, Michael; and his wife, Betty. Leroy was predeceased by his mother.
