Maria was working as a clerk at the Happy Bargain 99 Cents store at 74th Street and Broadway. She was closing up shop. A man entered the store between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. and shot Maria multiple times.
This is believed to be a botched robbery attempt. She did not resist the robber.
A customer found Maria about 9:00 p.m. and Martha was given vigorous first aid and rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced deceased.
The suspect is described as a black male in his 30's. If you have any information about his incident, you're urged to contact the LAPD's 77th Division at (213) 485-4164. You can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
Residents admit the area does have its problems, but the store is just three blocks away from the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street headquarters building. The suspect, who was last seen running south, could have run right by the station to make his escape.
People in the district are in mourning that someone would pointlessly shoot this woman who had worked at the store for one year.

Martha is survived by many loving friends and relatives including her husband and four daughters and a son. Her children are between the ages of 19 and 3.
