He graduated from Torrance High School, and later the Police Academy. He joined the Hawthorne Police Department in April of 2003.
He was currently the commander of the department's traffic bureau. He oversaw daily traffic enforcement activities and had a major role in the department's driving-under-the-influence enforcement detail.
Leonard is described as a well-liked officer in the Department. He had quickly risen through the ranks after graduating from the police academy first in his class academically 10 years ago.
Police Officials stated that he was a fantastic police officer and an even better friend. He was a smart professional who was always there for his comrades. He was easy-going and friendly.
