She was riding on her morning commute to work on the back of a motorcycle driven by her son-in-law. She was shot down by unknown gunmen. The "unknown gunmen" are the Taliban.
She was transported to a local hospital but died within the hour. Her son-in-law was injured but has survived as of this posting.
She was a mother of three.
Islam Bibi was the top female police officer in Helmand Province. She worked leading a team of female officers in the criminal investigation department.
She had fought against intimidation and death threats against her for years but kept up her work, trying to provide normalcy and law and order in a society where justice is almost unknown.
The reason for the murder of Islam Bibi is a symbolic gesture against women's rights. Women are not supposed to have real jobs, to be so bold as to be police officers, to venture outside of the home, or walk about without the Burqa, the head-to-toe covering mandated for women by the Taliban. The Taliban fear that a woman who
works outside of the home may "meet men".
On three occasions, her own brother tried to kill her until the government took away his guns. Her father and sisters were also against Islam Bibi having a job as a police officer.
Islam Bibi is survived by many loving friends and relatives including her three children who will forever miss her.
God save us from the conservative freaks in Afghanistan - mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, who try to keep women chained to the 14th century. They want things just as it was in 1399 A.D.
