Patty was a member of the Buffalo Police Department. She had 5 years of service before the incident which ultimately led to her passing.
On December 5, 2006, Patty and her partner confronted an armed subject while responding to a 911 call about a fight at a convenience store in Buffalo. As they searched the subject he produced a handgun and opened fire, striking both officers in the face. Patty was shot twice. The first bullet struck her bulletproof vest, but the second one struck her in the chin, traveling through her body and lodging in her spine.
Officer Parete suffered a spinal injury as a result of the shooting and became paralyzed from the neck down.
The subject was convicted of charges in connection with the shooting of both officers and sentenced to 30 years in prison
Michael, Archangel, Patron Saint of the Police, pray for Patty |
Police Officials said that they are grieving for Patty and that she was a brave and courageous officer.
Patty had a passion for the outdoors and her Harley-Davidson motorcycle. She was accepted into the Police Department in 2001, at age 36.
Her fellow officers said she had great street instincts and an obsession with physical fitness.
She spent nine months undergoing rehabilitation in the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, New Jersey, but was still unable to move her arms and legs. The local community came together to raise more than a half-million dollars for her care, and in 2009 a new house was built in Niagara County to make it easier for her to get around in her wheelchair. Recently she was under hospice care.
Patty is survived by many loving friends and relatives including her father, Anthony Sr., two brothers, Anthony Jr. and John Anthony; a sister, Maria; and her partner, Polly Strait.
Thank you for serving, Patty.
Pray for all who die as a result of performing their duties. Amen.
Let us pray that Patty Parete is in heaven. Let us pray that she is at peace and is with God. Amen.
