Two men, heavily armed, broke into his home in Model City, Miami, just before midnight and demanded cash.
Maurice suffered from Lupus, a disabling disease. However, when the intruders started to barge into his daughter's bedroom, he fought back and he was shot several times. The killers, with bandanas covering their faces, then fled.
Maurice Harris had been out earlier and might have been followed home. Police state that the intruders had no connection to him.
Police are asking that anyone with information call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

His wife, Shakila, stated that Maurice had no enemies and that he meant everything to her.
Maurice had several convictions in his own past including drug and loitering charges. His family insists that this was in the past and that he was a devoted father and husband.
Friends and neighbors are praising Maurice for his courage in trying to defend his family against the intruders.
Maurice is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife, Shakila Stewart; an 11 year old daughter and a 15 year old son.
God save us from the Lost Ones who stalk the Earth stealing away life. Amen.
