Eric Williams - Federal Corrections Officer - Pennsylvania

Corrections Officer Eric Williams, age 34, died in the line of duty on February 25, 2013, at United States Penitentiary Canaan, in Waymart, Pennsylvania. 

Eric was an officer with the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. He had 18 months of service.

The United States Penitentiary Canaan is a high security institution housing male inmates, with a satellite camp that houses male minimum security inmates. The facility is located in the most northeastern county in Pennsylvania, 20 miles east of Scranton, and 134 miles north of Philadelphia.

Eric was stabbed to death by an inmate inside the prison at at approximately 11:30 pm. The inmate attacked Officer Williams and stabbed him with a shank before being subdued by other officers. Officer Williams was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Prison officials stated that the prison staff are in shock and in mourning over this senseless act. 

Eric was from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. He graduated from King's College with a criminal justice degree and worked in supermarket loss prevention and as a police officer before going to work in the federal prison system. He began his career with the Prison system on September 11, 2011. 

Family members describe Eric as not having a mean bone in his body. He was not aggressive or confrontational.  

He loved to hunt, fish, play soccer, go bowling and was working on renovating a house near Lily Lake. 

Eric is survived by many loving friends, comrades and relatives including his mother and father; 2 brothers and his sister, Lauren.
