Mark Schoonhoven

Sgt. Mark H. Schoonhoven, age 38, of Plainwell, Michigan, died on January 20, 2013, at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device on December 15, 2012, in Kabul, Afghanistan. 

He was assigned to the 32nd Transportation Company, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Mark joined the Army in 2006. He had previously deployed to Afghanistan in 2007-2008 and again in 2009-2010.

His decorations include two Army commendation medals, a National Defense Service medal and a NATO medal.

Friends and comrades describe him as down to Earth, helpful and caring. He is also described as humorous and courageous. 

Mark is survived by many loving friends and relatives.
