Edward Drummond-Baxter

British soldier Edward Drummond-Baxter, age 29, died on October 30, 2012, while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

He was participating in a meeting with Afghan Uniform Policemen, when he was shot and killed by a man wearing an Afghan police uniform who had been attending the meeting.

He was a member of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles attached to the Royal Marines - 40 Commando. 

Edward was born in Peterborough and lived in County Durham with his parents. He studied at University College London and gained a BSc degree in Psychology. While at university he was an active member of his local Army Reserves regiment, The Honourable Artillery Company.

He subsequently spent two years working for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office including a posting to Japan before joining the British Army. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2010 and commissioned into 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles in December 2010.

Military officials describe Edward as an excellent Platoon Commander with a calm demeanour who was respected by his soldiers and his fellow officers. He always put his soldiers first.

Family members stated that Edward was loyal to his family and friends. He loved the Gurkhas and died doing the job he wanted to do. 

Edward is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his mother, Helen; father, David; and sister, Emily.
