Robert Cannon

Senior Master Sgt. Robert S. Cannon, age 50, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died on July 1, 2012, in South Dakota.

Robert was a member of the 156th Airlift Squadron of the National Guard based in North Carolina.

Robert and 5 other members of his crew were flying a C-130 firefighting tanker aircraft, fighting a wildfire in the Black Hills of southwest South Dakota. They were dropping fire retardant, when the aircraft crashed.

Robert was killed in the crash. 

He was known as Robbie to his friends and family. 

Robert had been in the National Guard for 29 years. He had been a flight engineer since 1990. He also served as an instructor. In his latest deployment, he had served with his unit for four months in Afghanistan and returned home in March.

Family members describe him as a loving and caring family man who taught his daughter to drive, attended his son's sporting events, loved to fish, barbecue in the backyard and ride his motorcycle with friends. 

Friends describe him as the nicest and most sincere man you could want to meet. 

Robert is survived by many loving friends and relatives, including his wife, Melanie; his daughter, Madeline and his son, Alex. 

Pray for all who die in the performance of their duties. 

Let us pray that Robert Cannon is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
