He was deliberately shot by an Afghan soldier of the Afghan National Army. The Afghan soldier was also killed. The Taliban claimed responsibility.
He was with the 2nd Foreign Engineering Regiment (2e REG). He was from Saint-Claude. He joined the Foreign Legion in 2005.
Friends describe him as a kind and caring man.

Damien is survived by many loving friends and family members including his parents and his brother.
