Mark was with the 1st Battalion The Rifles. He had been in Afghanistan since April with the Battalion's B Company as the second in command of a 12-man Multiple.

He was from Plymouth, enlisted in the Army in 1996, joining the 1st Battalion the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment in Paderborn, with whom he served in Northern Ireland and Iraq.
Family members stated that Mark was unique - one in a million. He was loved deeply by all his family and friends. He was a devoted family man who adored his son and was so looking forward to the birth of his daughter.
Military officials stated that Mark was well known by everybody and well liked by all. They also stated that he was professional and a team player.
Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Mark Anthony Palin is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
