Nate Carrigan - Deputy Sheriff Fatality - Colorado

Corporal Nate Carrigan, age 35, died in the line of duty on February 24, 2016, in Bailey, Colorado.

Nate Carrigan
Bailey is a village in Park County, about 50 miles south-west of Denver.

Corporal Carrigan was a member of the Park County Sheriff's Office. He had 13 years of service.

Nate and seven other deputies were assigned to serve an eviction order at a home in Bailey, Colorado.  The eviction order was instigated by a mortgage company.

The man to be evicted, Martin Wirth, age 58, was an activist in the Occupy Denver movement. He had previously been evicted from a different property. He shot and killed a man in 1994 but got off on the basis of self-defence. He had two drunk driving convictions and had a number of protection orders filed against him due to his violent behavior. This man was bad news all of his life.

Just after 9:00 a.m., the subject left the house and then re-entered it with the deputies following behind, trying to stop him. The subject managed to grab a rifle and opened fire. Nate was shot and mortally wounded.

Tragically, Nate died of his injuries.

Two other deputies were wounded in the confrontation.

Martin Wirth was shot and killed by the deputies.

Nate had graduated from Platte Canyon High School in Bailey where he had been involved in wrestling. He later coached football and baseball at the high school and
