Derek Geer - Police Officer Fatality - Colorado

Deputy Sheriff Derek Geer, age 40, died in the line of duty on February 10, 2016, at a hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Deputy Geer was a member of the Mesa County Sheriff's Office. He had 15 years of service.

On February 8, 2016, Derek and other deputies were looking in Grand Junction for a male reported to be armed. Derek approached a young male suspect and spoke to him for a few moments. A confrontation erupted and Derek attempted to taser the suspect. However, the young male pulled out a handgun and opened fire. Derek was shot several times.

Derek was rushed to a nearby hospital and put on life support. Tragically, Derek was beyond saving. His organs were donated to help save the lives of others.

Austin Holzer, age 17, has been arrested in connection with this tragedy.

Derek was a U.S. Navy veteran.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office is in mourning over the death of their brother. Derek was a valued officer, who helped many and who saved at least one life during his career. He will be forever remembered.

Derek's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Derek is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his children.

Thank you for your service to the community, Derek.

Pray that Derek is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
