Deputy Sheriff Steven LaCruz Thomas, age 26, of Canon, Georgia, died in the line of duty on May 21, 2014, on a highway in Georgia.

He was known as Cruz to his family and friends.

Cruz was a full time member of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and a part time member of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

Cruz was on duty for the Franklin County Sheriff's Office on the evening of May 21st. At about 9:00 p.m., Cruz Thomas was on Highway I-85 in pursuit of a speeding motorist when an 18-wheeler suddenly changed lanes in front of him causing him to veer off the road. His vehicle overturned and struck several trees. He died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the 18 wheeler sped away after the incident. Anyone with information regarding the tractor-trailer that caused the fatal wreck is urged to contact the Franklin County Sheriff’s office at 706-384-2525 or your local 911. You do not have to give your name.

Cruz's father, Stevie Thomas, is the Sheriff of Franklin County.

Cruz attended Franklin County High School and North Georgia Technical College. Previously he had served as a 911 dispatcher for Franklin County. 

Cruz was a Mason and a member of the Canon Baptist Church.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office are in mourning over the death of their brother. He will be forever remembered.

Cruz's family are devastated over his tragic and senseless death. He will be forever mourned.

Cruz is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents, Stevie and Tina Thomas; his sister, DesireƩ Thomas; and his daughter, Taliya, age 8 months.

Pray for all who die by misadventure. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.

Pray that Cruz is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
