Gary Morales - Law Enforcement - Florida

Sergeant Gary Morales, age 35, died in the line of duty on February 28, 2013, in Fort Pierce, Florida. 

Gary was a member of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office. He had 13 years of service.

He was conducting a traffic stop on a city street at approximately 9:30 a.m.

During the stop, a subject exited the stopped vehicle and opened fire, striking Sergeant Morales as he sat in his patrol car. 

He was transported to a local medical facility where he was pronounced deceased.

The subject was taken into custody.

Police officials describe Gary as a bright young man who was passionate about his job. He had just been promoted to Sergeant in January of 2013. 

Gary was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. 

Gary is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife; his brother; and his twin children.

Caleb Medley - Marine - California

Marine Caleb Medley, age 26, of Colorado, died in the line of duty on February 26, 2013, in Perris, Riverside County, California. 

Caleb was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. He was an assistant radio operator with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

He was on a skydiving training exercise with other marines. His parachute failed to open and he fell to his death. 

This tragedy occurred at Perris Valley Skydiving, which is not a government run facility. However, military personnel do skydiving training exercises there. Military personnel from around the world have been training at the site for the past decade. There have been at least 15 deaths at the site since 2000, with about 140,000 jumps taking place every year.

Since this terrible tragedy occurred in February of 2013 and 15 deaths have apparently occurred at this site since 2000 - then on average more than 1 person has died there every year. If this many deaths occur, then perhaps the 140,000 jumps per year are beyond their capacity to safely handle.

One of mankind's primal fears is the fear of falling. The fear of falling is evident in infants and across all cultures. Falling to one's death is particularly gruesome.

The Government of California and the Federal Government should be looking into the operations of this skydiving company with a view to determining what is going on there.  The military should suspend contracting out skydiving training exercises to this company, pending investigation.

Caleb was a combat veteran who had previously served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Caleb had received two combat Action Ribbons for having been under fire.

Our soldiers die in the line of duty even when they are not in combat zones.

Caleb is survived by many loving friends and relatives.

Nate Fruin - Firefighter - Michigan

Firefighter Nate Fruin, age 22, died in the line of duty on February 26, 2013, in Mattawan, Michigan.

He was a volunteer member of the Mattawan Fire Department. He had started with the Department at about age 17 as a cadet. 

Nate was on board a support truck traveling to the scene of an explosion at a Mattawan residence. 

The truck had just left the fire station when Nate experienced cardiac arrest. He did not have a history of cardiac problems. He had passed all of his physicals and appeared to be strong and healthy. 

Nate was taken to a local hospital where he passed away.

Fire Department officials are in mourning. They describe Nate as a real good kid.

Livia Smith - Hit and Run Victim - Nashville, Tennessee

Livia Smith, age 32, died on February 20, 2013, in Nashville, Tennessee. 

She was a victim of a hit and run. 

She had a left a bar after midnight and had taken a taxi cab to go home. She was found about a block from her home. She had suffered head trauma from being struck by a vehicle. 

It is not understood why the taxi did not take her to her door. 

Anyone with information regarding Livia's death is urged to call the Metro Police at 615-862-8600.

Loran Butch Baker - Law Enforcement - California

Sergeant Loran Baker Detective, age 51, died in the line of duty on February 26, 2013, in Santa Cruz, California.

He was a member of the Santa Cruz Police Department. He had 28 years of service. 

He was known as "Butch" to his friends and comrades. 

Sergeant Loran Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were following up on a sexual assault investigation at a residence at approximately 3:30 pm.

The suspect began fighting with the officers and fatally shot them both during the struggle. He then stole both of their handguns and fled the scene in their unmarked vehicle. He was located nearby approximately 30 minutes later and was shot and killed when he opened fire on responding officers. The subject was wearing body armor at the time he was killed by other officers.

Police Department officials state that the Department is in mourning over this horrible tragedy.

Loran had served as a field training officer and traffic investigator. Police officials describe him as a remarkable teacher and a skilled investigator who gave his all to the Department.

Others describe him as personable, thoughtful and approachable. He was a salt of the earth type of guy.

Loran is survived by many loving friends and relatives, including his wife, Kelly; two daughters - Jillian and Ashley; and his son, Adam, who is also a law enforcement officer.

Elizabeth Butler - Law Enforcement - California

Detective Elizabeth Butler, age 38, died in the line of duty on February 26, 2013, in Santa Cruz, California.

Elizabeth was a Lomita native who moved to Santa Cruz in 1992 for college and never left the City. She said that she loved the City because of the ocean, the mountains, interesting people and a healthy lifestyle all in one spot. 

She loved to cook, hike, ride roller coasters and spend time with her family. 

She is variously described as outgoing, bright, friendly, passionate about her work and community minded. 

Elizabeth is survived by many loving friends and relatives including her mother, Louise Butler; her sister, Alexis Butler; her partner Peter Wu; her sons Joaquin (age 5) and Stellan (age 2). She was predeceased by her father, Gerald Butler.

Martha Atwater - died in Brooklyn, New York City

Martha Atwater, age 48, died on February 22, 2013, on a street in Brooklyn Heights, New York City.

An out of control pick-up truck struck her as she stepped out of a café. She was buying cookies for her family. The truck jumped the curb at about 5:40 p.m. 

The driver stayed at the scene of the accident. Police state that there is no suspected criminality in this tragedy. 

Martha was transported to University Hospital of Brooklyn where she was pronounced deceased. 

Clifford, the Big Red Dog

Martha was an Emmy-award winning TV writer and had produced well-loved children's shows such as "Clifford The Big Red Dog," and "Goosebumps". She was also the author and co-author of several children's books. She was a graduate of Princeton University. 

Friends stated that Martha was enormously loved by her friends, family and community. 

She was involved in local issues in her neighbourhood and was on the Board of the Brooklyn Heights Association.

Anna Hurd - murdered in Maplewood, Minnesota

Anna Hurd, age 16, died on February 23, 2013, in Maplewood, Minnesota. 

Her body was found in a wooded area near Hillside Park. She had been stabbed to death. 

Anna was from North St. Paul.

As of this posting, no one has been arrested for this crime. If you have information, please call the Maplewood Police at 651-767-0640.

Anna had lived in Minnesota with her father for a year. She was a student at North St. Paul High School. She was expected to leave for Texas to be with her mother on the night she died. She was excited about moving to Texas. 

Her mother describes Anna as bubbly, happy, friendly and always smiling.

Her father describes Anna as fun and funny. She liked playing volleyball, was popular and liked hanging out with friends watching music videos. He has offered a reward for information leading to the conviction of his daughter's murderer. 

Both parents are deeply distraught. 

Anna is survived by many loving friends and relatives including her mother, Jennifer Hutchins; her father, Pat Hurd; and her 2 sisters.

Eric Williams - Federal Corrections Officer - Pennsylvania

Corrections Officer Eric Williams, age 34, died in the line of duty on February 25, 2013, at United States Penitentiary Canaan, in Waymart, Pennsylvania. 

Eric was an officer with the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. He had 18 months of service.

The United States Penitentiary Canaan is a high security institution housing male inmates, with a satellite camp that houses male minimum security inmates. The facility is located in the most northeastern county in Pennsylvania, 20 miles east of Scranton, and 134 miles north of Philadelphia.

Eric was stabbed to death by an inmate inside the prison at at approximately 11:30 pm. The inmate attacked Officer Williams and stabbed him with a shank before being subdued by other officers. Officer Williams was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Prison officials stated that the prison staff are in shock and in mourning over this senseless act. 

Eric was from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. He graduated from King's College with a criminal justice degree and worked in supermarket loss prevention and as a police officer before going to work in the federal prison system. He began his career with the Prison system on September 11, 2011. 

Family members describe Eric as not having a mean bone in his body. He was not aggressive or confrontational.  

He loved to hunt, fish, play soccer, go bowling and was working on renovating a house near Lily Lake. 

Eric is survived by many loving friends, comrades and relatives including his mother and father; 2 brothers and his sister, Lauren.

Jonathan Davis

Staff Sgt. Jonathan D. Davis, age 34, of Kayenta, Arizona, died on February 22, 2013, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 32nd Georgian Liaison Team, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Jonathan Davis enlisted in the Marines on October 21, 1997. He was a motor transport operations chief.
He had previously served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal.
Jonathan was a member of the Navajo Nation in Arizona.  

The Navajo Nation mourns the loss of their warrior who gave his life defending freedom.   He will be forever missed.

Brittany Clardy - murdered in Minnesota

Brittany Clardy, age 18, died sometime in February of 2013, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 

Brittany went missing on February 11, 2013. She had taken her mother's car to go shopping.

Her car was found on February 13, 2013 and towed to an impound lot by a towing company. They didn't check the vehicle. On February 24, 2013, it was confirmed that Brittany's body was inside the vehicle. 

Her death is being investigated as a murder.

It has been reported that Brittany was involved in prostitution and a man who was a client is the person who killed her.  This may be so or not. 

However, judge not, lest you be judged.  He who is without sin, cast the first stone. 

She had worked for three years in an elementary child care program. 

Friends describe Brittany as a positive young woman who was healthy, happy and just starting out in life. 

She is also described as a beautiful young woman with a warm smile and a bright future. 

Others said that Brittany was kind, sweet, friendly, a hard worker and well-respected. All agreed that she will be forever missed.

Manitoba Mennonites and Catholics - not in support of anti-bullying law

The government of the Canadian Province of Manitoba has legislation up for consideration (Bill 18) to attempt to put an end to bullying at schools or at least to try to curtail it somewhat. 

The proposals are based on similar legislation in effect in the neighboring province of Ontario.

The legislation is expected to pass by September of 2013, so that it is in place for the Fall school term. 

Gay Straight Alliance Groups at
School - prohibited

This is a good thing, as any attempts, at any level to prevent the torment of kids and young adults is the right way to go.  We should want to prevent teen suicides and the trauma from bullying that can be carried well into adulthood and can profoundly affect an individual's perception of their worth. 

However....apparently Mennonites and some Catholics in Manitoba are praying that this Anti-Bullying Bill is not passed.

Why you ask?  Because private Mennonite and Catholic schools may be forced by this legislation to accommodate gay and lesbian support groups and Gay-Straight Alliance Groups. 

Apparently, Bill 18 proposes that schools must allow student groups that promote respect for sexual orientation and gender identity to use school facilities for meetings.

This, the opponents say, strips faith-based schools of the right to set rules according to their beliefs.  What a load of rubbish.

Mennonites and Catholics should not be praying unto God for inequality. 

Pray that we all get with the human program for today - which includes equality for all.  You can't cherry pick human rights if you have a conscience. 

Do we have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century?  Are we going to continue to "party like it's 1899"?  

India - Rockets and Priorities in the Modern Era

There's money for this...

On February 25, 2013, India successfully launched a rocket carrying seven satellites from various countries into orbit.

The satellites include one looking for asteroids hurtling towards Earth, another to monitor for climate change, and changes in ocean currents and so on.  These satellites came from Canada, Austria, Denmark and Britain. 

India, which aims to send its first manned flight into space in 2016, has emerged as a significant player in the lucrative global commercial satellite-launch market, according to space experts.

India wants to launch a manned flight into space?   Why?

How about launching some programs in your own country that could possibly benefit your citizens?

Aaron Dugmore - bullied to death in England

Aaron Dugmore, age 9, of Erdington, died on February 12, 2013, at a hospital in Birmingham, England.

He had hung himself. 

His mother and step-father allege that Aaron was bullied to death by students attending Erdington Primary School. They allege that he endured months of bullying by Asian fellow students who taunted Aaron for being "white". 

His family say that Aaron was threatened with a plastic knife by one Asian pupil who warned him: “Next time it will be a real one.”

Aaron's family also state that they complained to the school but nothing was done to stop the bullying. 75 percent of the students at this school come from ethnic backgrounds. 

Aaron's mother also stated: “We are not racist people. Aaron got on with all the children at his last school, and for him to have been bullied because of the colour of his skin makes me feel sick to my stomach.”

They stated that after Aaron began attending this particular school he became troubled, argumentative and unhappy. It was then that he admitted that he was being bullied at school.

It is alleged that the school principal said to Aaron's family when they complained: "You didn’t have to come to this school, you chose to come here.”

If this is the case, the school principal should be fired. This is not how reports of bullying should be handled by a responsible administrator. 

If the principal and teachers at a Primary school can't monitor and handle kids under age 12, then what hope is there when these kids attend secondary schools as teenagers? Do they just run amok?

Howard Lavers - Fish and Wildlife Officer - Newfoundland

Officer Howard Lavers died in the line of duty on February 21, 2013, in Eastern Bluey Pond, near Blue Mountain, Newfoundland.

Howard was a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division.

Howard and two other officers were patrolling the area on snowmobiles when the ice broke as they rode across the pond. All three officers fell into the water. The other two officers were able to get back onto the ice. They attempted to rescue Officer Lavers but were not able to pull him from the water.

An RCMP dive team recovered Officer Lavers' body the following day.

Howard Lavers was well known in the area and his death has grieved the community.

Howard is survived by many loving friends and relatives.

Zuheily Rosado - died on the job at a gas station - Florida

Zuheily Rosado, age 32, died on the job on February 21, 2013, in Palm Coast, Florida. 

She was working the evening shift at a gas station. A man tried to rob the station. A customer found her body behind a counter. 

As of this posting, no one has been apprehended in connection to this tragedy. Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 386-313-4911 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-TIPS.

The killer is described as a light-skinned man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing blue jean pants and a dark T-shirt. The man is seen in a video pulling his shirt up over his face and is then seen fleeing the store moments later and heading west toward the entrance ramp to Interstate 95.

Friends describe Zuheily as hard working, always on the job, and always looking after her kids. She had 6 children and is described as a good mom to these kids. 

Co-workers describe her as sweet.  She never seemed to have problems with anyone. She is also described as an honest worker. 

Family members describe her as a good woman, a provider, with a good heart. She was hard working and always there.

Michael Boldon - killed driving a taxi in Las Vegas

Michael Boldon, age 62, died on February 21, 2013, on a street in Las Vegas, at 4:30 a.m.

Details are sketchy, but there was an altercation involving a man named Kenny Cherry at a casino that escalated and spilled into the street. Another person in a black Range Rover shot at a Maserati car on the street. This killed the driver, Kenny Cherry, who crashed into a taxi, which burst into flames, killing the taxi driver, Michael Boldon, age 62, and his passenger, Sandi Sutton-Wasmund.

The gunman in the Range Rover drove off and has not been apprehended as of this posting. If you have information about this crime, contact the Las Vegas Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (702) 385-5555.

Kenny Cherry - deceased

Michael Boldon moved to Las Vegas about a year and a half ago from Lansing, Michigan, where he had lived for six or seven years. Before that, he had lived in Detroit.

Family members stated that Michael was the rock of the family, and the go-to guy for the resolution of family issues.

Michael is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his mother, 4 siblings, his son, his grandson and his girlfriend.

Sandi Sutton-Wasmund - died from riding in a taxi in Las Vegas

Sandi Sutton-Wasmund, age 48, died on February 21, 2013, on a street in Las Vegas, at 4:30 a.m. 

She was from Maple Valley, Washington.

Details are sketchy, but there was an altercation involving a man named Kenny Cherry at a casino that escalated and spilled into the street. Sandi was a member of the Maple Valley Chamber of Commerce. Friends stated that she was the heart and soul of the community.

Friends describe her as a tireless volunteer, a great teammate and someone who could always be counted on. She had many friends who respected her. 

Sandi's family are wracked with grief and will forever miss her. 

They stated that Sandi was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister.

Horsemeat scandal in Europe - not really funny

The entire horsemeat scandal in Europe has some people chuckling and coming up with witty slogans and signs about eating horse.

It isn't really all that funny. 

Horse DNA has been found in food products such as lasagna, burgers, ground beef and other beef related products. 

Tests are being conducted by the British Government to determine the amount of Horse in particular products and for the presence of phenylbutazone, which is a horse medication prohibited for human consumption. 

It has been stated by some that the amount of horse that has been found in European processed food is negligible and that horse is generally safe to eat. 

We would suggest that someone is making money substituting horse for beef. This is called "fraud".  Horse is cheaper than beef.

Scams and frauds by food suppliers, slaughter houses, food brokers and food manufacturers are rampant world-wide. 

A U.S. university recently did a test study on fish. Red Snapper samples were obtained from fish markets, restaurants and grocery stores. 120 samples of Red Snapper were purchased and tested. 7 of them were actually Red Snapper. 

These two men were executed over
contaminated food

On November 24, 2009, China executed two men for their role in a tainted milk powder scandal in which at least six children in China died and more than 300,000 became sick.

The case was one of China's worst-ever food safety scandals, involving tainting of infant formula with the industrial chemical melamine, which can and did cause kidney stones and kidney failure. Melamine, used in the manufacture of plastics and fertilizer, was added to watered-down milk to fool inspectors testing for protein, and to boost profits.

It is all about corporate and individual greed.
