He was assigned to the 391st Fighter Squadron, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.
Francis was raised in a military family and lived all over the world. He graduated from England's Lakenheath High School in 1998. He joined the Air Force in 2004 after graduating from Auburn University, where he was a distinguished graduate in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. He served as an instructor pilot at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and later began the almost two-year training to become a F-15E pilot.

He was assigned to Mountain Home Air Force Base in October 2010, where he had been stationed since as an F-15E flight lead. He had logged more than 2,500 hours of flying time.
Francis Imlay was decorated for his service numerous times, with medals ranging from the Air Force Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal to the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Military officials stated that Francis was a true professional and his dedication to the Gunfighter family will not soon be forgotten. His nickname among his comrades was "Piston".
Francis is survived by many loving friends and relatives including his wife and 2 young children.
