Kristal Giesebrecht and Andrew Miller


Two Canadian soldiers, both Medics, were killed in Afghanistan in June, 2010, when their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. 

Master Cpl. Kristal Giesebrecht and Pte. Andrew Miller were killed when their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. 

Master Cpl. Kristal Giesebrecht and Pte. Andrew Miller, both medics from CFB Petawawa, had been responding to a report of a mine found in the doorway of a home when their vehicle detonated the IED, the military said. The blast occurred about 20 kilometres southwest of the city of Kandahar.

They were attached to the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group.

Kristal Giesebrecht was born in Wallaceburg, Ont., and was a member of 1 Canadian Field Hospital, based at CFB Petawawa in the Ottawa Valley.

Andrew Miller was born in Sudbury, Ont. A member of 2 Field Ambulance, based at CFB Petawawa, he was serving on his first overseas deployment.

Russell Madden

A soldier from Northern Kentucky has been killed in combat in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Russell Madden, age 29, of Dayton, died in June, 2010, when insurgents fired a rocket into his vehicle in Konar Province.


Russell Madden was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based at Conn Barracks, Germany.

Jacob P. Dohrenwend

Specialist Jacob P. Dohrenwend was killed in June, 2010, in Balad, Iraq.

Jacob Dohrenwend was with the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment based out of Fort Riley, Kan.

Andrew R. Looney

A soldier from Owasso, OK has been killed in Afghanistan.

Spc. Andrew R. Looney, who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, died in June, 2010, at Lar Sholtan Village from wounds suffered when a suicide bomber attacked their unit. He was 22.

Andrew Looney was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky. He was an infantryman assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in July 2007, and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.

Anthony Justesen

Pfc. Anthony Justesen, age 22, a Wilsonville native, was killed by an an improvised explosive device during a dismounted operation in Farah province, Afghanistan.

He had been serving with B Troop, 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, and is the 23rd Oregonian killed in Afghanistan.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Anthony Justesen is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Australian Commando Ben Chuck, age 27, from Yungaburra near Cairns, was among three Australian soldiers killed when their helicopter crashed in June, 2010. 
The other two Australian soldiers killed were Tim Aplin, age 38, and Scott Palmer, age 27.

Michael Taylor

British Lance Corporal Michael Taylor, age 30, was killed by small arms fire during a gunfight with insurgent forces in the Sangin District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in June, 2010.

Brandon Silk

Sergeant Brandon Silk, age 25, died in June, 2010, from injuries suffered during a hard helicopter landing in Afghanistan.

Brandon Silk served with the Army’s 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

He is survived by a loving family.

Scott Anthony Andrews

Spc. Scott A. Andrews, age 21, of Fall River, Mass., died June 21, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Lagman, Zabul province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. 

He was assigned to the 618th Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineers Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C.

David Taylor Miller



Pfc. David Taylor Miller, age 19, of Saratoga Springs, was killed by a suicide bomber while manning a checkpoint in the northern part of Afghanistan. 

He was a marksman with the 101st Airborne Division who arrived in Afghanistan less than two months ago.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that David Taylor Miller is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

James Hunter

A bomb blast has claimed the life of an American soldier in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. James Hunter, age 25, grew up in South Amherst, Ohio and graduated from Firelands High School.

He spent seven years in the army, had served twice in Iraq and was on duty in Afghanistan when he and another solder suffered fatal injuries from an explosion.

James Hunter was a member of the Fort Campbell-based 101st Airborne Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. 

He is survived by his intended wife and his family.

Robert N. Barton


A 101st Airborne Division Soldier died June 7, 2010, when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in the Dangam district, Kunar province, Afghanistan.

1st Sgt. Robert N. Barton II, age 35, of Roxie, MS, was an infantryman who entered the Army in October 1993 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2005.

He is survived by his wife, mother and father.

James Patrick Macneil

Canadian Sgt. James MacNeil, age 28, was killed on June 21, 2010, due to an improvised explosive device. He was patrolling with the Afghan army near Nakhonay, a village southwest of the city of Kandahar, when the device exploded. 

He was from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and was a 10-year veteran of the Canadian Forces and was on his fourth deployment. He was based in Petawawa, Ont., with the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that James Patrick Macneil is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Gunnar Hotchkin

Army Pfc. Gunnar Hotchkin, age 31, was killed on June 16, 2010, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

He is survived by his wife and 3 children and his family.

Michael P. Cassidy

Capt. Michael P. Cassidy, age 41, of Simpsonville, S.C., died June 17, 2010, in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. 

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Michael Cassidy is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Ashley Smith

British Trooper Ashley Smith, age 21, of the Royal Dragoon Guards, was killed in an explosion on June 18, 2010, while protecting a patrol that was conducting a clearance operation in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. 


He was from York, England. 

He had volunteered to join a patrol in an area known to be full of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Ashley Smith is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Joseph D. Johnson

Army Spc. Joseph D. Johnson, age 24, died June 15, 2010, in combat in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, Afghanistan. 

Joseph D. Johnson was born in Flint, Michigan.

Benjamin D. Osborn

Spc. Benjamin D. Osborn, age 27, of Queensbury, N.Y., died June 15, 2010, when his unit was attacked with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenade fires in the Shigalwashheltan district of Kunar province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

He is survived by his wife and his family.

Joshua Lukeala

Sgt. Joshua Lukeala, age 23, of Yigo, Guam, was killed June 7, 2010, when his convoy was attacked along a treacherous road leading to isolated Afghan villages. His wife, Deniece, and daughter, Maiya, live in Hanford, California. 

Joshua Lukeala was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade combat team of the 101st Airborne Division (air assault).

He had also deployed to Iraq, where he received the Purple Heart.

Gays in the Military


Over 12,500 gay men and women have been dismissed from the American Military since 1993 for being gay.

Many of these men and women have been computer technicians and foreign language translators - fluent in Arabic, Russian, Farsi and other languages of interest to the Central Intelligence Agency.

The USA approach to gays in the military is a 1950's approach and is old school.

These countries listed below allow gays in the military:


Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, B
ritain, Canada, Czech Republic, 
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Israel, Italy, 
Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, 
South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay, Australia

And the USA is less free-thinking than Estonia and Slovenia? 



Let us allow gays into the military freely.   Get with the program of equal rights for all your citizens. You are the land of the free, after all. 

Benjamin D. White

Benjamin D. White, age 24, was killed in Afghanistan on June 9, 2010, when his NATO helicopter was shot down by Taliban insurgents.

Joel Gentz


First Lieutenant Joel Gentz died June 9, 2010, in a helicopter crash near Forward Operating Base Jackson in Afghanistan.

Three other airmen were also killed. There are no details available on exactly how the crash happened.

Joel Gentz was assigned to the 58th Rescue Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

He is survived by his wife. Joel Gentz is originally from Michigan.

Michael P. Flores

Staff Sergeant Michael P. Flores was killed in a helicopter crash on June 9, 2010, near Forward Operating Base Jackson, Afghanistan. 

Michael P. Flores was assigned to the 48th Rescue Squadron stationed out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. A Taliban spokesman said insurgents fired two rocket-propelled grenades to down the NATO helicopter on Wednesday. The crash happened in Helmand province, part of a volatile region where Taliban still hold sway despite a U.S. troop buildup.

Sergeant Flores is survived by his wife and two children.

Christopher W. Opat

Spc. Christopher W. Opat, age 29, from Iowa, died June 9, 2010, in Baqubah, Iraq.

Christopher Opat was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Military records show that Christopher Opat enlisted in the Army on Aug. 7, 2003 in Memphis, Tenn. He served three and a half years in Germany and was serving his third deployment to Iraq at the time of his death. His most recent deployment began last August.

Israel P. O'Bryan

Sgt. Israel P. O'Bryan, age 24, of Newbern, Tenn. was killed on June 11, 2010, by a suicide attacker in an explosives-rigged car.

Israel O'Bryan was assigned to the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Israel is survived by his parents and other family members.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Israel P. O'Bryan is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Christian Adams

Spc. Christian Adams, age 26, died June 11th in Kandahar, Afghanistan from wounds sustained from a non-combat related incident.

Christian Adams was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.


He was from Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Andrew Breeze

A British soldier, Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze, was killed on June 12, 2010, in an explosion in Afghanistan.

He was with the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment.

The 31-year-old from Manchester, England, died while working to clear an area near a checkpoint in the Nahr e Saraj district of Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Andrew Breeze is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

William C. Yauch

William C. Yauch, age 23, died while on a mission in Jalula, a town about 80 miles northeast of Baghdad. Yauch's unit was attacked June 11, 2010, with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.

William Yauch, who was assigned to a unit out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, is survived by his wife of Batesville, his mother of Cave City and his father of Saint Charles, Mo.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that William Yauch is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Robert Fike

Sergeant 1st Class Robert Fike, was killed in Zabul province, Afghanistan on June 11, 2010.

Sgt. Fike was a graduate of Penn Trafford High School and Edinboro University. He had been a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard for 16 years and served in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan. 

He was on foot patrol when he and another soldier from western Pennsylvania were killed, while a third was injured.

Sgt. Fike leaves behind a 12-year-old daughter.

Mario Rodriguez


U.S. Army Sgt. Mario Rodriguez, age 24, was killed in Afghanistan on June 11, 2010. He left behind a wife and seven-year-old daughter.

He was from Texas.

Brian "Bucky" Anderson

Army Spc. Brian "Bucky" Anderson, age 24, was killed by a roadside bomb while on patrol in Afghanistan on June 12, 2010.

He joined the Army in 2008 and was based in Fort Drum, New York.

A member of the 10th Mountain Division, Anderson was deployed to Afghanistan in April, 2010.

Just a few days before he died, Brian Anderson received a commendation for his positive attitude and his ability to spread that positivity to his comrades.

Grzegorz Bukowski

A Polish soldier, Pfc. Grzegorz Bukowski, age 29, was killed and two were injured in a missile attack on the Warrior base in Afghanistan.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Grzegorz Bukowski is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

David J. Hartman

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. David Hartman, age 27, was killed on February 3, 2010, in Timagara, Pakistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an explosive device.

He was assigned as a civil affairs noncommissioned officer for Team 622 in Company B, 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), 95th Civil Affairs Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C. 

David Hartman grew up in California and went to high school in Japan; he never lived in Wisconsin but visited his mother in Pardeeville, Wisconsin about every six months.

He had been married for almost four years to Cherise Sabio Hartman. Their son is a little more than 1 year old, and their second child is due in July.

Gavin Brummund

Lance Cpl. Gavin R. Brummund, age 22, of Arnold, California, was killed on June 10, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. 

He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Gavin Brummund is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen

Jacob Moreland and Darren Smith

Australian soldiers Jacob Moreland, age 21, and Darren Smith, age 25, were both killed on June 7, 2010, in Afghanistan. They were killed by a roadside bomb.
